Lake Ginninderra

Lake Ginninderra is a beautiful spot in Belconnen, Canberra. It is located near the mouth of the river and has been used for recreational purposes since its inception back in 1894 by Edward Lord. Today, Lake Ginninderra remains a popular location for locals to visit and enjoy themselves as well as people who are visiting Canberra for work or on holiday. With plenty of places to walk around or sit down with a picnic blanket, it's one of those places you can't help but relax at!

It was originally created as an irrigation reservoir for nearby farms which have since ceased operation so today it serves primarily as a recreational area with facilities such as boat hire available. It's home to a variety of wildlife that you can observe on your visit, including the occasional kangaroo!

The lake was constructed in 1974 to collect stormwater discharge from a 98.8 square kilometres catchment that includes the surrounding suburbs of Aranda, Macquarie, Cook, Bruce, Belconnen, McKellar, Giralang, Kaleen in the eastern areas of Belconnen.

Lake Ginninderra is a huge freshwater lake, measuring about 40 hectares in size. It's home to plenty of wildlife too and you may spot kangaroos or even wallabies on your visit! Besides just looking out over the water from one of the many viewing platforms around Lake Ginninderra, visitors can also hire boats for fishing trips or get up close with some local birdlife at the National Capital Bird Hide. Other facilities include toilets and barbecues. The flocks of birds that fly overhead are mesmerising to watch as they swoop down into their roosts along its shores each evening - it really does make an amazing photo opp if you're quick enough!

The lake is home to much wildlife such as swans, moorhens, ducks and the rakali. The lake was formed through the construction of the Ginninderra Drive embankment across Ginninderra Creek.
