Australian War Memorial

The Australian War Memorial is a museum in Canberra that commemorates the service and sacrifice of Australians at war. The memorial was founded by King George Sound on November 11, 1941. The building's design was developed by architect Sir Edwin Lutyens, who also designed the Cenotaph in London. It opened its doors to the public on April 18, 1941, after an opening ceremony attended by over 12000 people including Prime Minister John Curtin and other high-ranking government officials.

The Australian War Memorial was established in 1941. As a world-class museum, shrine and research centre, it tells the stories of men and women who have served Australia during wartime up until this point. Exhibitions share personal experiences of military service while technology objects provide more information on the events surrounding these conflicts for both veterans as well as newcomers to history.

The Australian War Memorial is located in Canberra, the capital of Australia. The memorial was opened by King George VI in 1941 and has since been recognised as one of the most significant memorials of its kind in the world. It contains an extensive collection of more than 300,000 paintings, photographs, films and artefacts relating to conflicts that Australians have participated within or witnessed over 100 years ago.

It is widely recognised as one of the most significant museums in the world.  If you are visiting Canberra you must visit here. Entry is free.  The War Memorial is a shrine to all those who served and died in war.

There are many memorials around Australia but this one is universally recognised as being our most important national institution which honours more than 100,000 Australians who have given their lives for us. You can easily spend 2 hours and more to go around.

Its a place for deep reflection and celebration of individual and collective sacrifice across all the conflicts that Australians have participated.

The Hall of Valor is exceptionally well set out, and provides a fitting tribute to the men and women who have made outstanding contributions above and beyond the call of duty.
